RESEARCH

image.png

Our research investigates the changing drivers of forced migration. Taking a regional focus, our teams uncover the unique and untold experiences of displaced people local to their context. Whilst we believe in raising awareness, we are committed to providing actionable solutions, and therefore centre our reports around this - driving change.

Our regional focuses are selected annually. Learn about our standards for producing, reviewing and publishing research above.

Sub-saharan africa

Sub-Saharan Africa hosts over 38.8 million internally displaced people, around 46% of the global total. Whilst the majority of these displacements remain driven by conflict and violence, this is compounded by escalating displacements from climate disasters. Beyond this, there are nearly 8 million refugees living in Africa - forcibly displaced by similar threats.

Our research focuses on the intersection of climate and conflict displacement, concerned with both early warning systems and adaption frameworks, and also pathways to status and dignity in the countries where people seek refuge.

europe AND U.S.A

Europe hosts 13.2 million refugees, over 6.2 million of which are from Ukraine. Since 1975, the US has welcomed over 3 million refugees from across the world. Whilst both are positioned as a potential safe haven, hostile asylum policy and increasingly aggressive media narratives present a grave threat to refugees seeking to rebuild their lives.

Our research focuses on exploring humane asylum policy frameworks and de-radicalising public discourse.

SOUTH ASIA

South Asia hosts 7.1m internally displaced people, and around 3.3 million refugees. Rapid climate-driven migration converges with and translates into urban migration pressures. Increasingly militarised boarders, however, are limiting the extent to which people can flee unsustainable situations.

We focus on climate displacement and adaptation, alongside legal protection gaps and urban migration.

MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) faces significant levels of internal displacement at around 16.2 million, and 15.7 million refugees. Driven largely by protracted crises, those who are forced to flee often face legal identity challenges.

Our work focuses on the legal identity challenges faced by those from the region, alongside  the pathways to status and dignity.

GLOBAL AND COMPARATIVE

This team analysis climate displacement and adaption, narrative warfare and public discourse, legal protection gaps, and youth storytelling and knowledge production via comparative case studies taken from across the world.
