ANTI-EXTREMISM

As much as structural change concerning migratory frameworks will advance the welfare of refugees on the move and settling in new countries, anti-migrant rhetoric and the radicalisation of attitudes towards refugees constitutes a grave and tangible threat. Anti-extremist policies and programmes are therefore integral to securing refugee protection and improved welfare. No one should have to flee their home only to find themselves persecuted all over again.

Moreover, we are realistic about the effect this is having on the policy landscape. The spread of these views have shifted the focus of immigration policy from protection and welfare to prevention and hostility. To make the policies we advocate for tenable, anti-extremism efforts are central. We need to create the conditions for change.

We believe bringing young people into the conversation essential to tackling this. At present, young people are not included in discussions around migration unless they have direct experience of it. But this is something that affects us all - the way we treat those coming to us for support speaks volumes about who we are. Most concerningly, this means that the first exposure young people have to conversations around migration are often sensationalist and extremist. Where respectful and normalised conversation lacks, extreme views proliferate. We want to start a conversation. If you have any thoughts or ideas we want to hear from you - get in touch

We are currently beginning research into extremism and anti-migrant views, alongside building an understanding of the current actors tackling this in the UK. We anticipate launching campaigns and programmes in this area soon!
