STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF THE NATIONALITY AND BORDERS BILL
28 April 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Forced To Flee are extremely disappointed at the passing of the UK Government's Nationality and Borders Bill yesterday in Parliament with the rejection of final amendments in the House of Lords.
This does not mean the end of our fight. We will continue to stand up for the rights and safety of those forcibly displaced & fleeing war, persecution & violence. Refugees will always be welcome to the United Kingdom. We support and commend the efforts of organisations around the UK in convincing people about the unnecessary and inhumane aspects of what is about to become an Act of Parliament.
Nevertheless, during the fight we did have some wins. After successful challenges by UK organisations; Freedom From Torture, Care4Calais, Channel Rescue and the PCS Union, the Home Office issued notice that its use of pushbacks has officially been withdrawn. We congratulate those organisations for fighting for refugees and taking the battle directly to the Government to prevent the cruel practice from being used by the United Kingdom.
The passing of the Nationality and Borders Bill is upsetting for many, especially coupled with the new government deal with Rwanda which Forced To Flee have written an objection to along with 15+ organisations, a collection of youths and activists. But as we said, we will never stop fighting for the rights of forcibly displaced people in the United Kingdom and around the world.
