How are we celebrating World Refugee Week 2021?
Forced to Flee's theme of World Refugee Week this year is "Stronger Together" to celebrate our joint resilience during a time of uncertainty. As young advocates for refugee rights, we can work together to support refugees during this unprecedented time. COVID-19 has greatly affected asylum seekers around the world, and we hope to raise awareness and bring about change this World Refugee Week.
On June 20th, Forced to Flee is hosting a panel event featuring a group of advocates and experts on refugee rights. By facilitating this conversation, we hope to emphasize the importance of global participation in the refugee crisis and inspire change. The panel will be held at 3pm UKT. Get tickets here
Forced To Flee are also releasing a global pledge for refugees, human rights & equality that can be signed as an organisation or individual as a call to action.
On Friday 18 June, we're taking over @unrefugeesuk instagram account! And at 5pm, we'll be going live with UNHCR Legal Protection Assistant, Martha on our Instagram @forcedtoflee

Significance of World Refugee Week
Refugee Week celebrates refugee's journeys and their experiences. During World Refugee Week we celebrate refugees. We celebrate our contribution to the crisis. We celebrate our co-operation, with one another, to help end the crisis.
We reflect on those who lost their lives due to reckless action by people, and governments.
And we show our strength, as a planet, as one community, as one family. We show refugees all around the world that we are here for them, we show them that we hear them, and we show them that we stand with them. We listen to those whose voices aren't heard and give them a platform to speak out and shout from the rooftops for everyone to hear!

What does "Refugee" Mean to Us?
Many people have different opinions on the word "refugee". If you ask google it tells you that a refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. To others it can be an insult, a word, understandably, that no-one would want to be known as.
We believe a refugee is someone who is honourable, courageous, determined, resilient and equal. They are no different to anyone else, whether that be your neighbour, your high school friend, or you. They are just like us. Humans. People. Family. We all live together under one roof, that is this earth. We must show refugees that they should not be frightened or scared to speak, and we are here to listen and support. We are here to make a change. Together.
