Around 37,000 people are forcibly displaced daily due to war or persecution, and the number of forcibly displaced people has recently risen to 70.8 million. 50% of the world’s refugee population are children. Only around 16% of refugees are hosted in developed countries. In fact, the United Kingdom is only home to roughly 0.6% of the world’s refugee population. |
Over two thirds of refugees come from the same five countries: Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia, and Syria. For Syria specifically, over 5 million people are refugees, over 6 million are displaced in Syria, and around 12 million need humanitarian assistance. Since 2015, over 4 million Venezuelans have been displaced due to violence, human rights violations, lack of basic needs, and more. |
As of June 2020, 134 refugee-hosting countries reported local transmission of COVID-19. This is a challenge for refugees as they are especially vulnerable due to diseases such as COVID-19 due to a lack of geographical stability and health & sanitation services.
