Main Causes of The Crisis
The causes of the refugee crisis are complex but broken down at a high level, they have been listed below:
1. Syrian Civil War
Thousands of people are forced to leave Syria due to the ongoing conflict in the region. Many refugees flee to neighbouring countries or try and find a safe haven in Europe and further. However, tensions have seemed to calm in the region meaning that refugees are slowly returning home.
2. The Climate
This one is a biggy. Many hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing their homes because of changes to their local environment. These people are officially known as climate migrants or environmental migrants. However, the media has dubbed them the term "climate refugees". However, they do not have the official title of a refugee as they are not fleeing; persecution, violence or a political regime. The climate seems to be an important issue in the media and society today. To help stop climate migrants, we need to stop climate change.
3. Germany's open borders
Many refugees think they can easily enter the European Union due to Germany's open border policy. This increases the amount of refugees coming to Europe.
4. War, persecution or violence
Many refugees flee war, persecution or violence. They seek safety in another country or area as they feel that the place where they currently reside is no longer safe and they are at risk. This has been going on for centuries and we still haven't found a solution. War, persecution or violence are serious issues facing refugees today, and what many people don't realise is that they are leaving their families, childhoods and sometimes even children behind. Refugees normally travel for days, across harsh terrains and borders in hope of safety. They often end up in refugee camps with little shelter, food or protection. A place where no person should have to live.
